BEM UI Invites Anies Baswedan, Ganjar, and Prabowo to Political Debate, Not Lecture

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – University of Indonesia or UI’s Student Executive Body (BEM UI) decided to schedule a political debate involving Anies Baswedan, Ganjar Pranowo, and Prabowo Subianto on September 14, 2023.

BEM UI chairperson Melki Sedek Huang said that the three potential presidential candidates had expressed their willingness to participate in the debate on campus ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Melki said BEM UI expected dialogues and two-way communication between the figures as it is called a debate, rather than a public lecture. “So it is not a public lecture,” he confirmed on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

UI students, he explained, will be able to question the ideas and minds of the nation’s future leaders during the upcoming presidential debate.

“We received a positive response from Ganjar, Anies, and Prabowo. As they said directly or through their spokespersons, they are ready to come and exchange ideas with UI students,” Melki added.

BEM UI also invited all young people, students, and various other elements of society to attend the presidential debate on the UI Campus. “Starting tomorrow (August 24), we will send official invitations to each of the existing presidential election candidates; Ganjar, Anies, and Prabowo,” he said.

BEM UI issued the challenge after the Constitutional Court granted a judicial review of the Election Law regarding the campaign venue. In its ruling Number 65/PUU-XXI/2023, government facilities and educational places could be used for election purposes under certain conditions, including permission from the site’s authority and the absence of campaign attributes.
